1 · The pity counter
Every wish without a 5★ bumps your hidden counter by one. The base 5★ rate is only 0.6% per wish - but the counter never resets between banners of the same type, so patience compounds.
2 · Soft pity & hard pity
From wish 74 (character banner) the rate climbs about +6% per wish, so most 5★s land in the 74–80 range. Wish 90 is the hard pity - a guaranteed 5★.
3 · 50/50, Radiance & fate points
A character-banner 5★ is the featured one half the time; losing guarantees the next. Since v5.0, Capturing Radiance nudges that to ~55% overall, and the weapon banner guarantees your chosen weapon after one fate point.

When does soft pity start?
Around wish 74 on the character and standard banners - the per-wish 5★ rate jumps from 0.6% to roughly 6.6% and climbs ~6 percentage points per wish until the hard pity at 90. On the weapon banner soft pity begins near wish 63, with hard pity at 80.
Does pity carry over between banners?
Yes - your 5★ pity counter and your guarantee status carry over between banners of the same type (one character event banner to the next, weapon to weapon, standard to standard). Weapon-banner fate points also persist between weapon banners, but nothing carries between different banner types.
How many wishes for a guaranteed 5★ character?
Worst case 180 wishes from a fresh 50/50 (lose the 50/50 at hard pity 90, then guarantee at another 90). If your next 5★ is already guaranteed, it's 90 wishes at most - and soft pity means most players get there around 76–80.
Is 62 wishes really a 50% chance at a 5★?
No - that's a persistent mix-up. 62.5 is the average (the official 1.6% consolidated rate), but averages sit below the median for this system. The real numbers: 62 wishes ≈ 31% chance, the 50/50 point is ~76 wishes, and 90% confidence needs ~80.
